The Head of UN-Habitat Iraq Programme, Mr. Muslim Qazimi, welcomed the visit of the Korean Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Choi Sung-Soo, representing the Korean Embassy (Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Baghdad, Iraq and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA Iraq Office) leadership in Sinjar to witness the achievements under the project on “Promoting Peace and Stability in Iraq by Facilitating Sustainable Returns.”
The mission highlighted how UN-Habitat has been prio…ritizing the Housing, Land and Property (HLP) rights of minorities, particularly women and people with disabilities, in the conflict-affected district of Sinjar.
The delegation had visited housings rehabilitated for female-headed households and disabled facility members. Also, the delegation witnessed how securing access to adequate housing and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities has been instrumental for the returns through testimony from the mukhtars (community leaders).
The Municipal Director, Mr. Kamal Sharo emphasized UN-Habitat’s positive impact in Sinjar with the assistance of the Korean government. He stressed the critical need for affordable and social housing and the provision of basic services to ensure everyone has access to sustainable return for the internally displaced people (IDPs) and returnees, aiming to achieve durable solutions in the displaced areas.
