This World Children’s Day, we celebrate refugee children in Iraq. Thanks to UNHCR’s support, more than 49,000 refugee students were enrolled in public schools across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I) for the 2023-2024 academic year.
The Refugee Education Integration Policy welcomes Syrian refugee children and teachers into the public education system. In 2024 alone, UNHCR has:
✔ Built six new schools and rehabilitated eight others in the KR-I.
✔ Constructed 34 new classrooms in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.
✔ Supported language courses for over 5,000 refugees to ease their transition into Kurdish-language instruction.
